The auction is set to take place on 300 square kilometres of land, situated around 100 kilometres from the Special Economic Zone of Duqm , a strategic area for Oman’s energy and industrial sectors. Hydrom’s move to release the RFQ is a crucial step as Oman seeks to bolster its position as a leader in the green hydrogen industry, tapping into a growing global market for renewable energy.
The RFQ process invites global companies and organisations to submit their qualifications for participation in the auction. By mid-June 2025, Hydrom will send out the Request for Proposal to those applicants who successfully meet the criteria outlined in the RFQ. Following the RFP release, bidding will open, with submission deadlines scheduled for January 2026. The winning bids are expected to be announced in the second quarter of 2026, providing a clear timeline for the development of the next phase of green hydrogen projects.
The land allocated for this auction, located in the Duqm region, is poised to become a key asset in Oman’s green hydrogen strategy. Situated in an area already earmarked for economic development, it benefits from proximity to SEZAD, which is rapidly becoming a hub for industrial activities. The strategic location offers an opportunity for scaling up hydrogen production while tapping into nearby infrastructure.
Hydrom’s auction is designed to attract both local and international players in the renewable energy sector. The green hydrogen industry, powered by renewable energy sources like solar and wind, is gaining traction globally, particularly in Europe and Asia. Oman’s commitment to this sector underscores the nation’s ambitions to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, while also positioning itself as a key player in the hydrogen economy of the future.
With the country’s abundant solar and wind resources, Oman is uniquely positioned to lead in green hydrogen production. Experts predict that Oman’s ability to harness these resources efficiently will be crucial in making green hydrogen a competitive alternative to traditional energy sources. The land in Duqm, with its ideal weather conditions for renewable energy generation, will be a vital asset for meeting both local and international demand for clean energy.
The green hydrogen auction also forms part of Oman’s broader vision for sustainable development. The Oman Vision 2040 initiative has set ambitious targets for renewable energy integration into the national grid, with green hydrogen playing a pivotal role. The third round of auctions is a testament to Oman’s determination to maintain momentum in its energy transition.
As the deadline for RFQ submissions approaches, industry experts are closely monitoring the developments in Oman. The growing interest in the auction is expected to generate significant investment in green hydrogen projects, particularly as countries around the world increase their focus on energy security and sustainability.
International investors, particularly those from Europe and the Middle East, are showing strong interest in Oman’s hydrogen potential. Several large multinational companies are looking for opportunities to expand their renewable energy portfolios, and Oman’s stable investment climate makes it an attractive destination for these ventures. Moreover, Oman’s strategic location near international shipping routes enhances its appeal as a potential exporter of green hydrogen.
Hydrom’s auction is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving Oman’s renewable energy goals. As countries around the globe increasingly recognise the value of green hydrogen as a clean alternative to natural gas and coal, Oman is positioning itself as a leader in this burgeoning market. The successful completion of the third round of auctions could pave the way for further investment, innovation, and the development of new technologies aimed at making green hydrogen more affordable and scalable.
The increasing competition in the global green hydrogen market has also spurred Oman to accelerate its efforts to refine its regulatory frameworks and ensure the creation of a conducive environment for green energy projects. Hydrom’s meticulous planning and timely execution of the auction reflect Oman’s commitment to creating a robust ecosystem for clean energy technologies.
The country’s ability to collaborate with international partners will be essential in driving the growth of its green hydrogen industry. Hydrom’s transparent approach to the auction process is expected to foster trust among stakeholders and attract a diverse array of bidders with innovative solutions for green hydrogen production.
